Some of you may serve a role similar to that of a classroom aide, working with different students and subject areas each time your volunteer. Others may work with a small group of students on a specific subject area, often literacy or math. If you are working mostly with students on reading, you have come to the right place.
Among other resources, we have gathered some literacy strategies from a manual called The Next Step in Guided Reading by Jan Richardson. Richardson describes the four stages of readers we encounter in elementary school: emergent, early, transitional, and fluent. At each stage there are specific strategies that are useful in helping the students you work with progress to the next level.
