Literacy Intervention
Guided by school literacy coaches, volunteers provide daily structured intervention to improve the literacy skills of selected students. Select volunteers support students just below grade level, directed by the district. This volunteer placement is a two-hour commitment each week, and volunteers must be particularly reliable. If specifically interested in any of these areas, please indicate this in the comments box at the bottom of the Application Form.
Juliana AndersenAs a former teacher, Juliana thinks it’s especially rewarding to work one-on-one with students, getting to know them and building a strong rapport. “I love working with the kids, establishing a connection with them and seeing their progress throughout the year.”
Juliana has been able to work with one student in particular for 3 years at Costaño School in East Palo Alto. This student opens up to her about her friends and how school is going. Due to their strong connection, the student lets Juliana know which academic areas she wants help with and this enables Juliana to focus her tutoring and mentoring in the areas that matter most to the student. |
Marion McGregorMarion is currently volunteering in our literacy intervention program. Why does Marion choose to volunteer with ASM?
“I always believed that all children deserve an equal opportunity to learn. ASM is trying very hard to improve the challenges that the students from East Palo Alto and eastern Menlo Park are experiencing. All Students Matter is an association which brings not only support and care, but also kindness to the students and helps them grow academically and emotionally.” |
